Guest Speaker Dr. Jake Ivan will speak on

"Canada Lynx Reintroduction to Colorado"

The program for the 2012 Annual Meeting will be an informative interlude about the elusive Canada lynx with Jake Ivan. Dr. Ivan is currently a wildlife researcher for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

He has a Ph.D. in Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology from Colorado State University, an M.S. in Wildlife Biology (2000) from the University of Montana, and a B. S. in Wildlife Science from Purdue University (1997). In addition to employment with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Jake had worked for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and The Nature Conservancy on a variety of taxa including small mammals, carnivores, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Dr. Ivan will present a slide show that highlights efforts to establish a viable population of Canada lynx in Colorado. The Colorado Division of wildlife initiated a reintroduction effort in 1997. From 1999-2006, 218 wild-caught lynx from Canada and Alaska were released in Colorado. In September, 2010, the reintroduction program was officially declared a success as a self-sustaining population of lynx now exists in the state.

Join Jake Ivan, Wildlife Researcher with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, for a special one-evening lecture to explore conservation of these elusive cats. Learn basic ecology of lynx of their close relatives in Colorado, North America, and around the world. Discover how the lynx reintroduction came to be, how it was carried out, and what we learned along the way. Hear about current and future lynx research around the state and discuss contemporary conservation issues related to this species.
